ABUJA FCT - In a groundbreaking efforts to enable the utilization of technical instruments and resources to facilitate the promotion of sign language among the comity of languages in Nigeria and beyond.
The National Vice President of Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD), Mr. Nelson Chukwuemeka Umezurike ( who is fondly called Nelson Jovial by his friends and admirers) has advocated for massive collaboration between Deaf Community and tech developers to effectively create an innovative assistive technical device that will harness sign language in various tech models to eliminate all forms of communication gaps existing between the Deaf community and the wider society.
Umezurike made the appeal while speaking on behalf of NNAD to address a group of tech experts cutting across different parts of the world who thronged the Nigerian capital to commemorate the annual "Tech Developers Conference" hosted by the Google Developer Groups (GDG) Community tagged #DevFest2024 on Monday.
Emphasizing his stance during the event, the NNAD's second in command used the opportunity availed him to, on behalf of the over 10 million Deaf Nigerians, passionately advocated for collaboration between developers and the Deaf community to create groundbreaking Assistive Technological Solutions (ATS) aimed at breaking down communication barriers.
He urged, "one of the exciting ideas i proposed was harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to train AI models that can automate Sign Language usage"
"This, he noted, could revolutionize access to education and healthcare for the deaf community and significantly lighten the load on Sign Language Interpreters"
"I was also amazed by the cutting-edge innovations shared by the incredible speakers throughout the the conference" he added
The NNAD's vice president invitation to participate in the event highlights the impressive commitment of the #DevFest2024 organizers to fostering inclusivity and the exciting positive impact the event will brought to bear on the technological advancement of the thriving Deaf community in Nigeria and beyond, Ability News Network reports
