Group Trains Female Deaf Students of Special Education Centre Gombe on Menstrual Hygiene, Reusable Pads Making

GOMBE - A group under the aegis of "Be My Hand Initiative (BMH )" has equipped the female Deaf students of Special Education Centre, Gombe with new manipulative skills and knowledge needed to maintain menstrual hygiene for promoting  healthy living among students in the school 

 The BMH whose  objectives Ability News Network gathered is to foster literacy through education,  bring about a healthy society through focus on girl child & maternal health, build a culture of interdependency (Ubuntu- Xhosa) "I am because you are" and raise awareness/solution for contemporary societal problems such as; unemployment,     Illiteracy,poverty,  domestic violence,  abortion  suicide,  rape, teenage                       pregnancy, earlymarriage, drugs abuse, hunger etc, has been at the forefront of championing inclusion for women and girls and fighting for their rights in the society.

                Speaking to ANN Correspondent penultimate Saturday,   Jemimah Simon Hosea, the BMH's Human Resource Manager said the objective of the excercise is to teach the special students how to produce reusable pads by themselves and use same as an alternative whenever disposable pads are not available to them

Hosea noted, "our goals is to empower these special students with useful information and knowledge about menstrual hygiene, teach and train them on how best to utilize   facilities like toilets, sanitary pad banks, proper waste management facilities to ensure they  adequately cater to their periods"

According to her, such knowledge would  contribute to removing the stigma and shame associated with menstruation"

Though the World Menstrual Hygiene Day being  a global event which is celebrated every year on May 28th, to raise awareness about the importance of menstrual hygiene and break the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation, the BMH's efforts to reach out to these set of special students at this period of daunting economic challenge is quite timely, strategic and worth emulation by others making wave in the health sector. When contacted for comment on the development by ANN Correspondent, the school Headgirl Hafsat  Musa heaped praises on the BMH team for their concern towards the female Deaf students and wished them well in all their endeavors

She noted, "we sincerely appreciate the commitment demonstrated by  the our trainers who equipped us with useful information and knowledge about menstrual hygiene"


"Thank you for your concern towards our school and we wish all of you prosperity in all you do" the female senior prefect noted.
